Senior lecturer at the University Of Ghana Institute Of African Studies, Dr. Obadele Kambon has called for African leaders to better appreciate the basic tenets and principles of Pan-Africanism to move the continent forward.
According to him, people in leadership positions in Africa have little or no understanding of what Pan-Africanism means and are working to undermine the concept of Pan-Africanism as a way of helping black people.
Dr. Obadele Kambon explained that concept of Pan-Africanism was built on 7 key objectives during the first Pan-African conference in 1900 which include, the desire to raise powerful African states, promote the business interest of black people and be respected amongst others.
He however mentioned that the original concept of Pan-Africanism has been hijacked by foreign powers and is gradually losing its true meaning.
“People who are in leadership position have no understanding of Pan-Africanism as it was or if they do, then they are actively working to undermine it as it was originally considered to help black people…”
Speaking on Radio Univers morning show on Thursday, he further called on African leaders to make a proper and detailed analysis of the progress made by the continent to enable proper planning for the future.
“I think that beholds us to look at basically doing some stock taking and find out what has been accomplished and what hasn’t been accomplished and I think we have to go. But I don’t think its the time to lament. What we need to do is what Marcus Garvey did and take stock to see which goals did we accomplish and which did we not accomplish, and then from then we can actually take some action” he added.
