University of Education, Winneba’s inability to secure a win over host University of Ghana denied them the chance of extending their lead on the men’s football league table.
UEW, until the dying minute of the game, were leading and looked set to hand UG their second defeat in the league.
A free kick, well taken by UG’s number 8 jersey man, was too strong for the UEW goal keeper as the ball slipped through his gloves.
The game had to be decided on penalties and it was team UG who had won the day.
UEW’s defeat places them second on the table, sending University of Cape Coast to lead the table with 21 points after 8 games.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s defeat to University of Mines and Technology on penalties does no good to them in their pursuit for gold or silver.
University of Ghana win against UEW also does little for them on the league table.
Defending champions, University for Development Studies may now have to consider settling for bronze as they are 5th on the table after 8 games.
All teams in the top four, but KNUST and UEW, have 2 more games to play before the end of the competition.
UG will face UCC on Friday before coming up against UMaT on Saturday.
UCC, after their game against the host, will have UDS as their next hurdle.
