The University of Ghana male Football team will participate in the maiden Triangular Football Games from Tuesday, 8th to Sunday, 13th June, 2021 at the University of Cape Cost.
This will be the first competition for the team after the 2020 GUSA Games as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participating Institutions and Rationale
The participating universities are University of Cape Coast as the host, University of Ghana, Legon and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
The idea of Triangular Games was mooted by the Sports Directorates of these three universities to prepare their various teams for the upcoming maiden edition of the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Football Championship and also strengthen the sporting ties that exist amongst them.
Team UG Preparation
The Football Team, under the guidance of Chief Coach, Mr. Yusif Amuda Tahiru has been in non-residential camping for the past six weeks to build a formidable team after a long break.
Some new players have been added to the core of the team that participated in the 2020 GUSA Games to replace players who graduated last academic year and some who had scholarships to the Americas.
The team played eight (8) friendly matches with teams in the 1st and 2nd Divisions of Ghana Football and some assembled sides winning seven (7) and losing one (1). The team managed to score eleven (11) goals and conceded (4) goals.
The Coach, Mr. Yusif Amuda Tahiru is happy with the progress of the team;
“I am glad to see the hardwork, team work and how quick the team has adapted within this period. The performances we saw in the friendly matches gives us the hope and confidence going into the Triangular Games. The goal of Team UG is to perform well, win the trophy and cultivate a tournament winning culture in this team as the FASU Football Championship beckons”
The contingent comprises of twenty (20) players, three (3) Coaches, two (2) Sports Organisers, a Physiotherapist and Management of the Sports Directorate.
The team will depart Legon on Tuesday, 8th June, 2021 for Cape Coast.
