The Mensah Sarbah Hall basketball team have emerged Champions of the 2019 University of Ghana Basketball league.
The Vikings beat their rivals from the Commonwealth hall by a 54-36 score margin to maintain their unbeaten record in the league.
The outcome was no surprise to many, as the Vandals had already lost to their bitter rivals twice this season and had a comparatively poorer record than the Vikings who had made it to the semi-finals of the UG Basketball Championship for the fourth consecutive year in the last five years.
Both teams started the game nervously as it took a couple of minutes to make the first few shots. Commonwealth’s aggressive approach seemed to have failed from the start as Coach Joel Tham and his charge were not perturbed with the high intensity and the numerous chants and boos from both sections of supporters.
Sarbah led the first Quarter by a 14 to 7 points amid the good defensive display by both sides.
The second Quarter saw Amuzu,Mawuli John step up to task, making three successive shots from the 3-pointerrange to steal the show. Sarbah totally dominated the quarter, scoring in the post and making good transition shots and kept a resolute defense.
Commonwealth responded with a strong performance in the third quarter, keeping it slow and careful and making more inside moves, as they drew a couple of fouls form the Vikings and benefited from few ‘free shots’ to spark some hope and narrow the point margin to ten.
Daniel Opare activated arcade mode, making it difficult for the Viking defense who had a tough time tracking his runs, while Benjamin Ashitey capitalized on rebounds.
Mensah Sarbahhall were not done yet, as they rose to occasionin the fourth Quarter.
Treasure led the core as he distorted the Commonwealth defense getting the ball to the wide men, the shooters, who did further damage to ensure the Vikings ended their Basketball Trophy drought.
After the game, captain John Amuzu expressed his excitement at the win. “We are happy to have won this trophy.
It came from hard work, this is not the first time we are playing a game that has a lot of anxiety”. The Champion said.
He also spoke about the structures they had put in place to ensure the Mensah Sarbah Basketball does not fade off.
“We are trying to build a basketball dynasty and you can see how we moved from a team where no one will want to join to winning on our fourth attempt”.
The win also meant that Mensah Sarbah Basketball team go into the record books as one of the two unbeaten teams in the UG basketball Championship season.
The Vikings recorded their13thsuccessive win in a row, in what has been described by many lovers of the game as a very difficult and draining basketball season.
