Kalidou Koulibally won this year’s edition after he polled an impressive 41 per cent of the votes cast with Mane polling 26 percent of the votes placing second; Bordeaux right back Youssouf Sabaly was third with 12 percent of the votes cast
Many are wondering why Sadio Mane lost the award to Napoli’s Koulibally being on fire last season for club and country.
Mane played a key role in helping the reds get to the final of the 2017/2018 UEFA champions league after losing the ultimate to the defending champions(Real Madrid).
He was also part of the Taranga lions of Senegal as they qualified for the 2018 world cup in Russia.
Now,let’s take a look at how Kalidou Koulibally caught the eyes of the voters.
Koulibally, 27, last year played a critical role in seeing off the Senegalese side qualify for the 2018 world cup in Russia.
He also shone at the World stage despite Senegal failing to make it out of the group stages. The Tarangalions were the first African side to win a match at the 2018 world cup in Russia after a 2-1 victory against Poland.
The Senegalese center back played a key role in Napoli defense as he helped The Parthenopeans secure second place in the Serie A in the 2017/18 season with a club record point of 91 next to the winners (Juventus) with 95 points.
Koulibally was named in the top five best center backs in Europe by Sportskeeda placing fourth position after Barcelona Gerard pique, City’s Nicholas Otamendi and Bayern Munich’s marts Hummel’s with inter Milan’s Skrinniar due to his commanding presence in the heart of Napoli’s defense coupled with his passing abilities.
He is an aggressive defender and never hesitates to go into tackles.
He averages almost 90 passes per game with an accuracy of 91.5 percent. Also, he averages 1.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game.
Finally the 27 year old star also received a universal recognition as top European sides like Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and especially Manchester united were rumored to have expressed interest in the 26-year-old player and that was enough for him to be voted as the best Senegalese player of the year under review despite a fine form from his team mate Sadio Mane.
The Senegalese player of the year also called the golden award is an annual award organized by the press in Senegal which solicits for votes from football fans locally.
