When it comes to nation-building, everyone you ask has their idea of how things should be done. Despite our varying views, the objectives still remain the same. Economic and political stability. Hence, the process of nation-building involves uniting the nation’s diverse population and leading them to work towards the progress of the nation.
For this reason, the responsibility of Nation-building depends on the citizenry as much as its leaders. The contribution of both parties is crucial to structuring the development of the nation. Participation however requires two fundamental pieces. The idea of vision and strong leadership.
One of the hallmarks of development is vision. A clear vision plays two roles in nation-building: it provides a clear sense of direction for the leader and presents a compelling reason why people should rally behind you. Just like a life vision, a clear vision for nation-building declares your destination.
It is the finish line that determines the necessary road or steps you need to take. Developing a clear vision ensures that every goal we set and every decision we make is systematic.
What’s more, rather than each party undertaking projects and policies arbitrarily hoping we end up in the right place, a clear vision for nation-building helps focus our energy and resources as a nation on worthwhile projects. With a clearly stated vision, even when we go through difficult times, we know it is for a reason.
In due course, the journey will get tough at some point, but if we have the kind of confidence a clear vision gives, we know that all our suffering is not in vain but for a glorious end.
The desire to build a strong and prosperous nation I believe is noble and praiseworthy. However, one would be making a grave error to consider or declare this task to be an easy one. For us to succeed, the responsibility of building a strong and prosperous nation must fall on the shoulders of strong leadership.
Leaders who are disciplined, resilient, creative, and accountable. For our vision to pan out, the role of strong leadership must not be overlooked. In our efforts, we will certainly face many difficulties and one to many adversaries, both from within and without.
Regardless, we must still press on. In the face of these challenges, we need strong leaders who will seek the interest of their people above theirs. Leaders who would not despair but hope. Leaders who will not throw in the towel but will lead us all to press on for the sake of our vision.
Nation-building is truly an arduous task. Nevertheless, history is proof that it is indeed possible, and having a clear vision and strong leadership increases our possibility of success. Take heed, our victory does not lie on the shoulders of one person or a few individuals but it is a responsibility we must all bear.
