Team Kantanka, the debate team made up of Mr. Piesie Nana-Yaw Safo and Mr. Oheneba Kwame Safo, has won the 6th edition of the Vice Chancellor’s Debate Competition (VCDC).
The team emerged winners after 9 preliminary rounds and three knockout rounds of the 20 team tournament which spanned three weeks.
The tournament followed the British Parliamentary (BP) format of competitive debating. The tournament was limited to students of the University of Ghana.
The finale of the competition took place at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on the 21st of April, 2019.
The four competing teams in the finals were:
Team Kantanka ( Piesie Nana-Yaw Safo and Oheneba Kwame Safo) as Opening Government,
Team FTA ( Mr. Solomon Omani-Mensah and Mr. Jeremiah Kobby Sekyi ) as Opening Opposition
Team Endgame ( Mr. Kelvin Ankomah and Mr.Abdul Halik ) as Closing Government
and Team 1 Point (Miss Sandra Paye and Mr. Benjamin Sackey Soci)
Members of the Chief/Core Adjudication Panel of the tournament were Mr. Samuel Assamoah (Former University of Ghana Debate Society President), Mr. Lawrence Nii Kotei (Former President of the University of Ghana Debate Society), Mr. Daniel Nana Yaw Obeng (Experienced Adjudicator and Public Speaker), Miss Maureen Kyere and Miss Alexandra Akoviah.
The tournament also featured a Public Speaking category.
Mr Oheneba Kwame Safo emerged winner of the Public Speaking category as well.
Other winners in this year’s edition were Mr Jeremiah Kobby Sekyi, Best Speaker in the Debate Category, Mr. Kelvin Ankomah, 3rd Best Speaker in the Public Speaking category, Mr Elorm Komla Boafo, Best Competing Judge and 2nd Best Speaker in the Public Speaking category, Mr. Ezekiel Addy, Best Novice Judge, Mr. Abdul Fattaw and Mr. Jonas (Team Thor), Best Novice Debate Team.
In his brief remarks at the finals, Director of Sports of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, expressed his contentment with the progress of the University of Ghana Debate Society.
He also showed appreciation to the teams of the society that represented the University of Ghana at the 2018 Pan African Universities Debate Championship in Tanzania and the 2018 World Universities Debate Championship in South Africa.
He however urged the society to gear itself towards winning the upcoming 2019 Ghana Universities Debate Championship to be held in Koforidua.
The Vice Chancellor’s Debate Championship and the SRC Inter Hall Debate Championship are the two biggest debate events on the University of Ghana calendar.
The finale of the SRC Inter Hall Debate Championship is slated for Tuesday April 23, 2019.
