Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency, Hon. Sam George has told the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not have a vigilante group.
According to the lawmaker, the “Azorka Boys” and “The Hawks” are neither the creation of the party nor recognized by the party and thus, the party is only a beneficiary of the activities of the two groups.
He added that the two vigilante groups owe their allegiance to individuals within the party
Describing vigilante groups as Community-based organizations, the NDC stalwart said that the party was just a beneficiary of the activities of the vigilante groups.
“Let me state in clarity that I believe these vigilante groups owe allegiance to individuals within the party. The individuals use them for political purposes [and] the party is just a vehicle which ends up as a beneficiary.”
Following violent clashes that took place at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, there have been growing calls for the police to clamp down on the actions of political thugs.
Recently, some executive and members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were attacked at the Ashanti regional office of the party, leaving one person dead.
President Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation’s address on Thursday called on the two leading parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress to work together and come out with a road map to disband vigilante groups.
The President stressed that should the political parties fail to work together, he would move to have legislative action to deal with the canker.
