Head of the Earth Science Department, Professor Sadow M. Yidana said that the presence of Geo-Scientist are not felt in the country as a result of the little information available to the public about the Earth Science course,
He also attributed the influence problem to the lack of governmental support.
According to the Professor, most students in the pre-tertiary institutions do not have enough information about Earth Science and other related courses thereby making them uninterested in the courses.
He emphasized the need for changes and support at both national and institutional level when he spoke to Unives News at the ‘’Open Day Ceremony in commemoration of the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the University of Ghana’’ organized by the Department of Earth Science
Touching on how best the department will be made interesting to students, he asserted that, ‘we are taking care of it. we are going to the secondary schools to conscientise them on the programs that are available at the department and to tell them the relevance of geology’
He also noted that, interventions from government in the form of equipment and infrastructure will be helpful.
“We believe that there are still some minerals undiscovered, we have seen the signs but we need support from the government”, he noted.
He was very optimistic that, should all these measures work out well, ‘very soon geology will be a household name’
