Assembly members in the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region are calling for a rerun of the election to confirm or reject President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for the Chief Executive position for the area, Hon. Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi.
An election, held on Friday, October 1 at the Madina Social Welfare for the same purpose, ended in chaos and the result is yet to be known.
Friday’s electoral process came to an abrupt end when chaos erupted between some Assembly members and electoral officers.
Speaking on behalf of other Assembly members at a news conference, Mr. Ibrahim Abdul Razak, who is the Assemblyman for the Madina West electoral area, called for a rerun of the election.
He said that Friday’s electoral process was characterized by fraud, hence, the need for fresh elections.
Narrating events, Ibrahim Abdul Razak alleged that National Security Operatives were present at the voting grounds physically assaulted Assembly members who protested against the irregularities.
“When voting was done, the electoral officer was ordered to empty the ballot box on the high table where the Regional Minister was seated. Other unknown persons proceeded to the high table, forming a barricade to obstruct the view of honourable assembly members…We, the Assembly members, whilst insisting on the right things to be done, became a target for brutality from National Security and thugs. Ten of us were thrown out of the hall,” he said.
According to him, all assaulted Assembly members voted against the confirmation of Hon. Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi.
“All ten Assembly members who were beaten and thrown out all voted no. Therefore, we are calling for reelection. We call on the President of the Republic of Ghana to do the needful by either renominating or withdrawing the candidature of Hon. Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi as Municipal Chief Executive of the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly,” he added.
