The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced that it has begun accepting applications from candidates who wish to be considered for admission to pursue any of their degree programmes for the 2019/2020 academic year.

The cost of an application form for this year’s admission witnessed an upward adjustment for Ghanaian undergraduate applicants – from GHC 180.00 to GHC 200.00

However, the USD 150.00 cost for International students has been maintained.

Among the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast and the University for Development Studies, which have all begun admissions for the 2019/2020 academic year, KNUST is the only institution among the country’s four largest public universities to have increased its admission cost.

That notwithstanding, with regards to application cost for Ghanaian undergraduate applicants, KNUST, for the 2019/2020 academic year, stands at par with the University of Ghana as it has pegged its cost at GHC 200.00  for local Ghanaian students although it has not seen an upward review since 2018/2019.

Applicants who have examination results as at the time of application and applicants who will be writing the 2019 May/June WASSCE are eligible to apply to be enrolled at KNUST.

All completed applications are to be submitted by post (EMS/DHL/UPS/FEDEX) to the Deputy Registrar (Academic Affairs), KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana on or before July, 31, 2019.

2019/2020 academic year admissions

So far, all of the nation’s largest four public universities have announced their commencement of admissions for the 2019/2020 academic year.

The four include the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and the University for Development Studies.

The University for Development Studies is the only institution of the four that is yet to be clear on whether it is accepting applications from students who will be partaking in the 2019 West African Examinations Council’s May/June exams.

Deadlines

The deadlines for the sale of Application scratch cards and the submission of completed application forms for admission into the University of Cape Coast are Friday, 10th May, 2019 and Friday, 17th May, 2019 respectively.

For prospective UDS applicants, the closing date for submission of applications is May 31, 2019.

Prospective University of Ghana regular undergraduate applicants are to submit their application by 30th June 2019.

Government to introduce centralized admissions system into tertiary institutions

The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, at a workshop held in January 2019 in Koforidua hinted on government’s plan to introduce a placement system for admission into tertiary institutions in Ghana.

The Centralized University Admissions and Placement Service (CAPS) is to replace the current stressful and expensive system of applying to different universities.

Prof. Kwesi Yankah explained that the decision by government was influenced by a proposal received from a nine-member committee chaired by Professor Cliff Tagoe in the Tertiary Education Policy Document submitted on November 1, 2018 to the Ministry of Education.

“It is the proposal for a Centralised University Admissions and Placement Service (CAPS), which replaces the stressful and rather expensive system of applying to separate universities in Ghana with a centralised system, where the applicants list their choices of university on a single platform.

“A central administrative and technical setup then facilitates the process of placement,” the committee said.
