The book is titled ‘From Achinakrom to Pro-Vice Chancellor’
It was launched on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.
The book is aimed at inspiring ladies to achieve greatness, regardless of their backgrounds.
It also educates parents on the importance of their presence in the upbringing of children.
Prof. Dolphyne explained that she was encouraged to write the book after she was approached by a man to inspire his three daughters to achieve greater heights.
She said that such a situation was rare as some men who come to her were rather feeling ‘punished’ for having more girls in their family.
“Let me just encourage all the young men here, if you children happen to girls, God does not make mistakes. So make sure that you do your part properly and encourage them… Having a daughter is not punishment,” she urged.
Prof. Dolphyne also counselled men not to leave the responsibility of raising children to women.
“Parents should not be upset that they have daughters. Fathers in Ghana tend to leave the raising of the children to the mothers but I think that everybody looks to the father as the important person in the house and if that important person in the house has time to talk to the children, play with them and read to them, I’m sure it will make a big difference in how children are raised in this country,” she added.
Delivering the keynote address, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, acknowledged Prof. Abena Dolphyne’s influence in her life as well as that of many others.
She recounted how Prof. Dolphyne inspired many young people to pursue graduate studies and return to join the Linguistics Department of the University of Ghana.
“I am extremely excited that Prof. Dolphyne has decided to document her life in the form of this book. I do thank God for giving you to us for these many years. She has set an example for us to follow. Prof. Dolphyne, no doubt, is a trailblazer… I have learnt from her to be persistent, ambitious, humble and humane. You will learn about these and more when you read the autobiography. Everyone needs to read this book.
