Deputy Speaker in Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu has indicated that demands placed on Members of Parliament by their constituents are unbearable.
Speaking at the maiden edition of Political Monetization organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs held under the theme, “Money, Influence, Corruption, and Capture: Can Ghana’s democracy be Safeguarded?” at the University of Ghana, the law maker said that it is quite unfortunate that MPs are seen to bear all the personal burdens of their constituents.
According to the Bekwai MP, the numerous demands of the citizenry on their representative in Parliament maybe the reason for the increasing rate of monetization in the Ghanaian body politics.
He said that Ghanaians “think because they have voted for you, you are responsible for taking care of all their social financial challenges”.
He noted that the attitude is so worrying since the populace elect anyone at all as their MP without considering competence but rather the amount of money people seeking to occupy public offer give them.
In effect, the burdens on MPs compel some to engage in illegalities.
Speaking on the same issue, Chairperson of the Christian Council, Professor Emmanuel Asante advised all political parties, the media, civil society organizations, and Ghanaian to take a bold step to solve the canker which has the propensity to distort the beauty in the body polity.
