The Dean of Students Affairs of the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin has urged the newly appointed Interim Students Representative Council (SRC) executives to find innovative ways of conducting an online election.
Speaking at the SRC’s handover ceremony of the newly-appointed executives, Professor Bokpin entreated the executives to explore the feasibility of conducting online election for the 2019/2020 academic year.
“I wish the interim executives a successful tenure in office, however there is a possibility of holding online election. We could work with the UGCS for us to hold an online election; this is something that the interim executives should explore as they move their meetings online. It is much easier to adhere to the social distancing protocols with meetings online” he said.
He further disclosed that the immediate response to the suggestion of online election was met with dissidence by the outgoing student leaders.
Professor Bokpin however commended the former Speaker of University of Ghana Parliament, Emmanuel Ampem for putting together a committee to develop protocols for virtual meetings of the General Assembly.
He also stated that “the 2019/2020 academic year has been a unique one due to Covid19 and the lack of consensus among student leaders and the numerous petitions”; hence they should learn to work together and devise means of successfully holding meetings.
“After every pandemic, the world is never the same and so it would not be any different from this Covid19. So it is important that, at the student governance level, we realign our governance procedures to embrace virtual meetings and e-governance that serves the students interest”.
Interim executives take over from Isaac Agyemang-led administration
The interim Executives of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRC) has been sworn into office to take over the administration of the Union for the 2020/2021 academic year.
In a short ceremony on Sunday July 12, 2020 held at the SRC Union Building, the Isaac Agyemang-led administration handed over to the interim executives to be led by Mr. Kwame Ntow Fianko.
This statutory ceremony comes days after the Executive committee triggered article 25 clause 7 which allows for the appointment of interim executives from the crop of eligible Junior Common Room Executives.
This is only plausible when the Union is unable to hold elections as is the case this year.
This saw JCR President of the Akuafo Hall, Mr. Fianko being elected among the remaining crop of executive committees to serve as the acting President of the SRC.
The General Secretary of the Mensah Sarbah Hall was also sworn in as the acting General Secretary of the SRC.
Newly appointed Committee chairman of the Finance Committee, Eyram Fenyi was sworn in as the acting Treasurer in accordance with article 25 clause 7.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Fianko said his administration will uphold the statutes of the constitution and safeguard the interests of students.
However, it was not made clear as to the duration of the tenure of the interim executives.
