The Ghana Aids Commission is set to partner the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and other stakeholders to educate and sensitize the youth and school-going individuals on HIV/AIDS.
A survey conducted in 2019 revealed that out of 20,068 infections recorded, 5,613, representing 28 per cent captured persons between the ages of 15 and 24.
This indicates that those young persons were being infected by older persons.
On that score, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Mr. Kyeremeh Atuahene says there are measures being put in place to educate and sensitize the public especially the youth and young women in the various educational institutions.
This, he indicated, will be done in collaboration with NUGS by constantly providing correct and accurate information on HIV/AIDS.
“We’re discussing with NUGS to have all the students of Ghana to be given information on HIV constantly, so that not only the awareness but people are educated on the correct and accurate information so that they can take the necessary precautions and prevent new infections,” he stated.
In his words, “we are doing is to intensify education especially targeting young people and with particular focus on adolescents and young women; education plus condom distribution in schools is already happening.”
Mr. Atuahene stated that the vulnerability of young women is one key factor that makes them susceptible to being infected.
“We have a situation in this country where a young woman looking for a job would have to sleep with employer before getting the job; things like this put women at risk of getting the virus.”
“Young people, even those who don’t work want to own the best things of this world. They want to ride in the best vehicles, have the best, have the best clothes; they want to have the newest high tech phone. All those things put them in situations that increase their risk to the exposure of HIV,” he bemoaned.
For him, it is high time people took serious precautions so as to prevent rise in new infections.
