The Greater Accra President for the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Harry Agbanu has reiterated that UTAG would only comply with the government if the former governing council of KNUST is reinstituted.
He explained that UTAG’s position on the dissolution of the former governing council of KNUST is that, they do not identify the authority of government’s instated Interim Council.
“We have already made it known to the government that we did not support their decision to dissolve the former governing council of KNUST and as such do not recognize the authority of the Interim Council”
Responding to claims that, UTAG is rescinding on its decision because there is a place for UTAG now on the Interim Council, he stated;
“Government adding UTAG to the council because we stood against its decision is a clear indication of government’s disrespect for teachers in the country, and that the whole act was and is against academic freedom”
Dr. Agbanu revealed that for that reason, the local KNUST UTAG is not having any representative on the Interim Council. Dr. Agbanu stated emphatically that, UTAG would only cooperate with the government only when the former governing council is reinstated.

The Local President for KNUST UTAG, Dr. Charles Marfo has stated that the government’s decision of dissolving the previous governing council of KNUST is not justifiable. He explained that the governing council was not given the opportunity to resolve the case, as no petition was presented to it. He further questioned the legitimacy of government to add to the Interim Council some members of the former governing council if we are to go by the argument that, the former governing council of KNUST failed to ensure peace and serenity on campus.
