The University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UG SRC) is requesting beneficiaries of the Student Loan Trust Fund (STLF) to submit their details through a portal provided.
It wants all students of the university on the STLF scheme, who were yet to complete their registration due to the delay in the disbursement of funds by the STLF to present their details to the SRC for onward presentation to management.
In a release dated Monday, February 17, 2020, and signed by the UGSRC Secretary Denise Abaniaba Kagal, the SRC courted the attention of the affected students in furnishing the SRC with the necessary details.
Prior to this release, beneficiaries of the STLF across the country had formed a coalition; Aggrieved Student Loan Beneficiaries to express their grievances on the delay in the disbursement of monies by the STLF.
It claimed that students had been sacked from examination halls during the previous end of semester exams and others have had to defer their courses.
The coalition had on several occasions released statements calling on the Ministry of Finance, Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education Prof. Kwesi Yankah and GET Fund to address the situation.
Threats of Demonstration
Earlier, a group of aggrieved students from across the country had issued threats of demonstration if the Ministry of Finance and GETFUND failed to release the funds as soon as possible.
Even though the date for the demonstration has been rescheduled several times, the latest scheduled to come off on 28th February, 2020.
“We promise them, we will hit the street and exhibit our displeasure to the authorities if the necessary actions are not taken. As association, we are giving the management of Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), one-week ultimatum to do the needful (disburse the money). We will take this opportunity to appeal to the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, and the Minister of Education to step in immediately and solve this issue once and for all. We will also urge the Ministry of Finance to do the needful”, the convener of the group noted.
The etymology of Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) was that, it was established in December 2005 under the trustee incorporation Act 1962 and Act 820 with the main focus and objective of providing financial support and resources for the sound management of the trust for the benefit of students and to help promote and facilitate the national ideals enshrined in the article 28 and 38 of the 1992 constitution.
