One man has been confirmed dead at the University of Ghana main hospital with at least 6 others in critical medical condition following the collapse of parts of an extension to the legon shopping mall which is currently under construction.
While all attention was directed towards the unrest at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, doom struck at the Legon mall where the extension of the structure which is adjacent the University of Ghana main hospital is being erected. The beam of concrete came crushing down together with laborers who were working on site.
Eyewitnesses who recounted the incident to #UniversNews off record, say some workers were casting a beam of concrete on the fifth floor of the structure when they saw the columns supposed to support the beam begin to bend and slope towards the opposite direction amidst screams from the men who were working on the site.
Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Dep. Commander Ebenezer Simpson who led a team of firemen to assess the extent of damage at the scene revealed that he suspects an engineering defect and that investigation were underway to ascertain the cause of the accident and present a report accordingly.
‘The workers should have been protected in a way but unfortunately that did not happen, so I suspect something might have gone wrong in a way, that is why that happened’, he said.
For the Engineer and Chief laborer (foreman) in-charge of the project, only identified as foreman Gideon and Engineer, they were nowhere to be found as at the this report was being filed, well over hours after the accident. The Police have cordoned off the area and labelled it a crime scene pending detailed investigations.
