Sporting facilities at the University of Ghana have been officially opened to the community for use at all times, the Sports Directorate announced on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Members of the University community, comprising students, staff and their registered spouses and dependents can now make free use of these sporting facilities on any given day and time.

“The sporting facilities are supposed to be used for sporting and physical activities only,” the notice directed.

According to the Directorate, only the basketball courts have been locked over extreme misuse and damage by non-UG community members.

Meanwhile, the keys to the basketball are available on request at the Sports Directorate.

The basketball courts are open in the afternoons from 3.30 pm.

“The basketball courts are locked due to the extreme misuse and damage by non UG community members because of the popularity of basketball which attracts so many non-community members using them illegally and deep into the night with our students and community members having less access,” part of the statement said.

Although facilities like the Volleyball and Handball courts have been fenced, they are not locked for human traffic.

On that score, keys have been made available for programmes that require vehicular use for loading and off-loading or for ambulances and other service vehicles.

Free access

Students of the University of Ghana have been given full and free access to all the sporting facilities excluding the gymnasium and swimming pool which would be given out at very discounted rates.

All other individual UG community members  who wish to use the facilities can do so without any hindrance.

“However, and in order to ensure order and usage on first come first serve basis, groups are advised to seek written permission from the Director of Sports for the release, and blocking of these facilities for the scheduled day and time requested for…

“In applying for usage by a group, they should indicate in their request the date, time and duration as well as the sporting purpose for which they intend to use the facility or facilities,” the notice further stated.
