Sports Secretaries for University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL) Halls have expressed worry over the disregard for the non-traditional halls in the University of Ghana.
According to the Sports Secretaries of the halls, more opportunities are given to athletes from Traditional halls; Akuafo, Mensah Sarbah, Legon, Commonwealth, Volta Halls, to the detriment of student-athletes from the UGEL halls, hence the reason for the substandard performances.
“When it comes to sports in the University of Ghana, we always write off the diaspora halls, but you realize that there are good athletes from the halls lately and we wish the sports directorate gave more credence to athletes from the diaspora because sports in UG is not just about the traditional halls. without the other halls, we would not have had a good competition to get the best out of the people. So whatever opportunities they give to sportsmen and women at the traditional halls, they should make the same opportunity to those from the diaspora to help us give our input.” Elizabeth Sey Hall Sports Secretary, Delali Kawku Adrah told UniversSports.
The Secretaries also bemoaned that officials always do the bidding of the traditional halls at University of Ghana Inter Hall competitions, citing the recent SRC Inter-Hall Football competition.
“Last two years in the Inter Hall sports Competition, in Men’s football they were supposed to give us the regulations that will guide the whole completion even before we start. but that did not happen until we got to the latter stage of the competition. They can tell us we are using Head to Head to declare winners but when it’s not in favour of the traditional halls, they change it to the number of goals. We protested but didn’t get results from the sports directorate. The same thing happened in the just ended SCR Gala, where Kwapong didn’t qualify from the group stage. We knew we had qualified for the next stage because we had better head to head than Akuafo Hall only to be told on the field that winners of the group will be determined by the number of goals and that is not fair on the part of the diaspora halls.” Alex Kwapong Hall Sports Secretary, Alexander Owusu Boakye said.
“Before the 2021 SRC Gala was held, all sports secretaries were invited for a meeting and we did the balloting. and everything was set. We knew all the rules that if teams are tied with points, we use Head to Head before goals but when the rule was not in favour of the traditional halls, they change it.” Delali Kawku of Elizabeth Sey added.
Sports Secretary for A. Kwapong Hall also said that the situation demoralizes his colleagues to compete for the hall.
“This has been the practice for a long time. They do these things and it prevents some of our athletes from unearthing their talents. I enter into a competition hoping that i will win and you use this as a block, it’s so discouraging and disheartening.”
