The Secretary for Societies and Welfare for the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and former president of the Jean Nelson Ackah Hall at the University of Ghana, David Hughes Devereaux, has demanded for the reopening of sports facilities on the university campus which have been locked up by the Sports Directorate.
He made this demand on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, when executives of the Union held a stakeholder engagement with the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie.
Among other things, the Union also raised concerns of sports enthused students about the general suspension of sporting activities in schools, urging the minister to work out a modality that allows the sporting activities to go on while observing covid-19 protocols.
Taking his turn to address the delegation, the Deputy Minister assured that he would table the matter before Cabinet in hopes of getting the President to issue a directive for the resumption of campus sporting activities.
On the score of reopening locked up sports facilities on the University of Ghana campus, the minister said he would invite the Director of Sports for further deliberations and the way forward.
He ended by expressing admiration for the Union’s determination to assert its place in youth affairs and charged leadership to collaborate with the Ministry in reshaping the mindsets of the youth about job employment instead of entrepreneurship.
