The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress for the December 2020 election, John Mahama, has promised to pay more attention to the development of so-called lesser-known sports in the country if it wins powers in the election.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s manifesto, John Mahama also promised to do more in support of well-known sports in the country.
These, the party believes, will go a long way in creating an active sports sector in the country.
“We shall continue to support the development of well-known sports and also invest in lesser-known ones to build a vibrant sports industry,”
He further indicated that “sports is an integral part of social interactions and an avenue for national cohesion”, voicing that it would “continue to offer opportunities to project Ghana at the international front and a tool for economic empowerment and development”.
The former president accused the ruling government of failing to continue sports projects that were started prior to their election.
“The Akuffo-Addo led government has failed to continue the several initiatives by the NDC in the sports sector and has also failed to implement any comprehensive policy on sports,” he said.
According to John Mahama, during his tenure as president, they “invested tremendously in sports development leading to Ghana’s participation in major international competitions and tournament”.
Also in the bid to invest and promote lesser-known sports, the NDC seeks to “facilitate tax exemption or relief regimes to motivate private sponsorship and promotion of sports in the country” and also “develop a framework with the various Sports Associations for promoting and marketing our domestic sports.”
