Legon Cities recorded their second win of the season as they thrashed Ashanti Gold by 5 goals to 2 at the Accra Sports stadium on Friday night.
The miners opened the deadlock courtesy of Yaw Annor’s 6th-minute goal but Nashiru Moro of Legon Cities equalized after 4minutes.
With a superior wing play, Ashantigold moved to get the second goal after Empem Dacosta delivered a fine cross from the right flank to meet the onrushing Yaw Annor, who pounced on it with a powerful drive for the second goal in the 29th minute.
It was Baba Mahama who scored in the 49th minute, after Jonah Attuquaye dispossessed Roland Amouzou at the left-back, before serving Baba who smashed a low grounder to beat Goalkeeper Felix Clottey.
The goal gingered the Royals on as David Cudjoe went on to score two more goals in the 53rd and 62nd minute to break Ashanti Gold beyond a comeback.
The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 89th minute after Fatau Dauda brought and Ashantigold attacker down, but Yaw Annor shot straight into the waiting hands of the Goalkeeper.
Cities ended the game with 10 men as Nicholas Mensah was shown the marching off orders for stepping on an opponent.
The result gets the Royals out of the relegation zone with 9 points on the 15th position on the log.
Speaking to the media after the game, the Manager of Legon Cities FC, Bashiru Hayford, was proud of the performance of his boys.
He says that he is proud of the massive improvement his boys have shown and commended them for even for the result even though they played without strikers.
“The first goal was just a dash. The second was a miscalculation but if you see the 5 goals that we scored, they were all tactical movements. They are learning very fast and we thank God for that. We played without a striker. I’ve converted the midfielders to strike for me. They are learning very fast because I told them that goal scoring is not only for the striker. Everybody that goes closer to the pole should score and now I had about three people scoring the five goals”
Coach Bashiru remained optimistic that his men will win their next match.
Meanwhile, Head Coach of Ashantigold FC Milovan Cirkovic was disappointed in his side’s loss. He attributed the loss to over complacency on the part of his players.
“Before the second half, in the dressing room, they told me they will win today. I warned them to be careful, maybe we can lose. For instance Number 14, I told him yesterday to play simple but he didn’t play simple, two times and by mistake changed the game. What can I do?”
Attacking midfielder of Legon Cities FC, Baba Mahama was named the NASCO ‘Man of the Match’ after putting up a stellar performance which helped the Royals defeat Ashanti Gold by 5 goals to 2.
Speaking to the media he said “…we did not see this win coming. I knew we will win but not with this margin.
With my performance, I think it was good. I started slow but now its better and I hope it continues.”
He believes that “the results will boost our morale for our next game to go in for a win. I know inter allies is a good team but we can win massively”
