Ace football administrator, Mr. Jonathan Abbey Pobee has stated that the Black Stars of Ghana can clinch the African Cup of Nation’s (AFCON) trophy unless there is proper accountability from top management officials.
The last time Ghana won an AFCON trophy was in 1982.
Speaking to UniversSports, the President of Neoplan Stars Football Club, Mr. Jonathan Abbey Pobee, mentioned that the trophy drought being suffered by the National male team could not be blamed on the players.
He believes that the problem should rather be laid at the doorstep of some top government officials and high profiled football administrators.
“Enough of the blame games, I don’t think we can win the trophy without transparency” he said
“People have been using the Black Stars to enrich themselves whiles some Ghanaians are in some remote areas sharing water with goats and sheep and you expect them to wish the black stars well?
Our problem goes beyond the players and the coaches. We need to sit down and discuss further issues relating to football and ensuring transparency in the game”
Mr. Abbey Pobee also believes that Ghana is not developing its football prowess as compared to other African countries and that makes it difficult for the nation to be competitive.
“I will commend the black stars for qualifying for the African cup of nations but we are not developing our football and that’s why we have not seen the cup for over three decades. Some African countries are really investing in the game and developing it”
The Black Stars will compete in this year’s African Cup of Nations which will be hosted by Egypt.
Ghana is in Group F with Benin, Cameroon and Guinea-Bissau.
The competition begins in June and Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah, is expected to name his provisional squad in the coming weeks.
