It was a nervy match as Manchester United took on Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge in the monday nights FA Cup fifth round match up.
Both sides were looking to make a statement win after United fell at the hands of PSG in the Champions league while Chelsea were handed a chastening 6-0 defeat by Pep Guardiolas Manchester City.
Chelsea fielded an unchanged line up from that defeat but United’s first team had changed slightly with Lukaku, Mata and Smalling coming in to replace Lingard, Martial (both injured).
The first half was quite evenly matched, both sides getting some chances but Manchester United being more clinical in front of goal.
After being largely anonymous in the match against PSG, Paul Pogba once again put in a classy performance – the sort that has typified him under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he assisted and scored.
United stunned the home crowd in the 31st minute as Paul Pogba found hardworking Ander Herrera’s head with a left wing cross, the Spaniard making no mistake as he put the ball past Kepa.
United were not quite finished yet as on the stroke of half-time, Marcus Rashford sumptuous delivery from the right of attack found the dominating Pogba who headed powerfully to make it 0-2 to the visitors. Kepa Arrizabalga could have done more to prevent the second goal.
Sergio Romero only had to make two saves tonight against Chelsea. A miserable evening for Sarri as the fans booed his substitutes and sang songs calling for his sacking.United win their first in nine attempts and their third in twenty three games at the Stamford Bridge.
United will take on fellow Premier league side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the quarter finals of the FA Cup.
