First half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscienly handed the Gunners a sweet revenge over their London rivals as they defeated them at the Emirates by 2 goals to nil.
Mauricio Sarri named an unchanged side from the Newcastle win as, his counterpart Unai Emery brought in Ramsey and Torreira to the starting line up as Mesut Ozil was named on the bench.
Arsenal began the game on the front foot and were soon rewarded in the 14th minute as Lacazette fired into the roof of the net after Bellerin’s cross fell kindly to his feet. Aubameyang then came close for Arsenal again in the 38th minute as his overhead kick caught Arrizabalaga rooted to the spot as he watched the ball sail inches wide of his far post.
Chelsea did not make Arsenal rue their missed chances as the Gunners doubled their advantage through Koscienly in the 39th minute, with the ball going in off his shoulder after Sokratis’s lofted ball.
Chelsea were unfortunate as they could have halved the deficit just before halftime with Marcos Alonso’s header hitting the upright. The Blues second half display was much more encouraging but the Gunners were resolute in defense as they held on to a famous victory over their bogey side at Emirates.
The results means that Arsenal and Manchester United have now closed the gap on Chelsea in 4th place to 3 points, and the Gunners have leapfrogged United into 5th place by superior goal margin.
