The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is expected to name his running mate for the 2020 presidential elections at a National Executive Committee meeting later today.
Among the shortlisted candidates, a former Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang said to stand tall with former Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, former Minister for Health, Mr Alex Segbefia and former Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffuor as outsiders, with little chance of securing the portfolio.
If she’s confirmed, Prof Opoku-Agyemang will become the first female to have held the position of a flagbearer in the two main political parties in Ghana.
Mr Mahama is likely to break the cycle of male running mates if he confirms the former Education Minister who is regarded as a woman of integrity, who also was the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
The National Executive Council, per the party’s regulations, may approve or reject the choice of the former President.
Mr John Dramani Mahama had for some time received pressure to announce his running mate, especially one that can face NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, as the 2020 presidential elections draw nigh.
