It is the dream of every student to score high grades in school. Funny enough, your Grade Point Average (GPA) can sometimes determine and affect the way you eat, sleep, hang out with friends and almost everything you do on campus.
Certainly, scoring straight A’s doesn’t guarantee success in life but think of the pride that comes with doing well in school. The joy that wells up in your heart and that of those who believed in you when you emerge with flying colours. Just the thought of it is enough motivation to push you despite all the obstacles that may come your way in your journey through/with education.
Now, truth be told, you will probably not like what you see in the window that displays your GPA. Perhaps it appears to always dwindle as you rise to higher levels. Or you may even be on the red line.
Nevertheless, there is hope since we are still in school and have a few more exams to take. It is always better late than never. Maybe all you need are tips to securing better grades this semester.
Here is how to achieve or push your GPA in an impressive way this semester and the semesters ahead.
Draw a detailed and concise plan for the semester.
Everything begins with a plan.If you fail to plan, you plan to fail which is very a popular saying and it carries a lot of truth. Begin your semester with the activities you intend on taking during that period and write them down (there is always magic in writing things down).
Most of our goals are not achieved because we tend to divert from the main goal by involving ourselves in activities which are not in line with the already set goals. Instead, try to stick to the plan. This way, you are not easily swayed to involve in other activities not planned for.
Attend and participate in class regularly
All things being equal, under no circumstance should your grades be dwindling when you regularly attend class. In fact, lecturers will admit that the first step to doing well academically is going to class frequently. Don’t unnecessarily miss class. Try your best to be punctual and on time.
Again, don’t just be in class, let your presence be felt. Participate in class. Move out of your comfort zone. Be bold in sharing your thoughts about the topic with your lecturer and course mates. You should be frequent in asking questions and also attempt answering questions.
Also, you can try taking the front seat, it reduces unnecessary distraction and helps you focus more.
Make use of online learning centres.
Technology has made learning easier and fun. You don’t always have to rely on your lecturers notes only. From Khan Academy down to our very own Damzinium.com in Ghana are great learning sites. These educational sites give more understanding on topics and courses students treat in class. There have been massive and great responses from users all over the country. Maybe that may just be your savior.
Befriend those who are making good grades
You may have spotted that guy or lady who usually has the answers to all questions asked by the lecturer. It is not by magic. You can be that person too. To be great, you have to think great and you can start by associating yourself with great people. After all, Great minds think alike. You may have to drop friends who do not support your journey to academic success. Such friends rather derail you. It may be tough letting them go but if it must be done, then it must be done well.
All that being said and done, note that you need to adopt some personal attitudes and good habits to make your dreams of attaining better grades this semester a success.
I call them the 3 D’s to success in school.
Discipline as defined by Cambridge dictionary is a form of training that makes people more willing to obey or more able to control themselves, often in form of rules and punishments if these are broken, or the behavior produced by this training.
This attitude comes at a great cost but the benefits and results are immeasurably worth it.It means getting your body and its demands under control. Not giving in to what the body dictates but rather what must be done and when it must be.
Give all your courses equal attention and devotion. Do not prioritize one over the other especially when you tend to focus more on course touring more easily or that interest you most. In the end you write exams on all of them (those greatly liked and the those equally disliked by you).
Have the zeal to fight your way to the top. Be motivated. Push your self and tell yourself you will make it against all odds. No matter the beginning you can still reach your set goals. With faith, heart and mind, success is yours.
God bless your efforts!
