It has become a trend in recent times that people wear what they consider comfortable rather than what is acceptable.
This trend trickles into corporate fashion and it seems that it is making strides in infiltrating the corporate world. Certain blouses and skirts just do not cut it in the corporate world.
Anyway, let us take a look at the do’s and don’ts of fashion in the workplace.
For the ladies, what happened to the cladding of White Blouses that are usually nicely tucked in and do more to cover the chest? Well, it has been replaced with colorful, light fabric and low-cut ones. The problem I am trying to highlight is that such dresses show cleavage. If you believe that looking sexy is fine in the corporate world, then you are very wrong. Avoid low-cut tops that expose cleavage and draws attention to this part of the body. The light fabric blouses also are not necessary at the workplace too but if it must be worn, then the undergarment must cover everything underneath or simply add a sleek vest.
For the Men, wearing short socks is a do-not in the corporate world. The short socks reveal hairy legs on men when they are seated and when their legs are crossed. This is unsightly. The pair of socks must cover a part of the calf. It is so unappealing to see a man’s hairy leg during a business meal or board meeting. Also the color of the soaks must match the suit color, not the shoes. Buy more pairs of black, charcoal gray and navy dress socks.
For the ladies, dressing in clothes that do-not fit is also a No! in corporate fashion. Oversize clothes should be avoided. That will be dangerous for your brand. If the clothing is too tight, especially the shirts, then your blouse will gap at the bust area. That truly is embarrassing. Both men and women should clad in attires that fully fit.
Another blunder in corporate fashion is the act of ignoring how neatly polished your shoes are and general grooming. People really notice shoes. Your shoes should be cleaned or polished and should be in good condition. This shows that you are paying attention to the details. Also, your clothes need to be clean and neatly pressed. Wearing a crumpled attire will not only cause distractions but will have your colleagues talking about you.
For a night out with friends and family, short skirts are okay but in the corporate world, it is a blunder. If you sit down in a meeting when wearing a short skirt, you expose even more legs. Your legs should not be the focus at that executive meeting. It is advisable to wear skirts that fall slightly above or below the knee.
Elaborate hairstyles are also a botch in the office. Hairstyles that are too high or too colorful draw unnecessary attention and are a big source of distraction. Keeping a simple style is the best for any corporate space, either held in a bun, ponytail or simply combed down.
Another negative attention drawer is the wild color choices. Imagine, a lady with a red blazer over an orange skirt, she truly wants all the attention. At work, you want to be remembered for your work not for your super bright attires. Don’t get me wrong, color is good just choose carefully.
Friday casual and African print dress codes are interesting additions in the world of fashion. It affords workers the chance to feel free and fosters unity in the workplace. This has it’s way of inspiring commitment in the world of work.
