The Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana has stressed that they are committed to withdrawing from the National Union of Ghana students despite a court ruling that they should follow due processes to exit from the mother body of all Ghana students.
Over the weekend, the General Assembly of the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) announced its withdrawal from the National Union of Ghana Students because the Union “has not proven itself worthy of such a cause” for which it was formed.
The SRC, in a communique announcing their disassociation from NUGS explained that “until a time when the leadership of NUGS deem it appropriate to operate the union on the principles and visions that gave way to its fruition, we shall have nothing to do with it.”
After the resolutions at the General Assembly, Legal Advisor of University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council, Afram Adomako Jnr. proceeded to court to seek clarifications on whether the University SRC has commenced processes on withdrawing from NUGS or has effectively withdrawn from the mother body of all Ghanaian students.
However, in the ruling of the Judicial Board, they ruled that the SRC should follow due processes before it effectively withdraws its membership from NUGS.
In a statement signed by SRC President Sylvester Amoako Owusu, he stresses that “the executive arm remains committed to following due procedures to implement the decision made by the General Assembly”
The statement added that “the SRC remains committed to its stands as read in the State of The SRC before the General Assembly to stay away from any divided NUGS Congress.”
“We have demonstrated strong faith towards this in an earlier Congress and we will stand by the interest of students by saying we wouldn’t empower any divided front” it added.
The communique further hinted that it would put up a survey and make a proposal to General Assembly to divert some GHC 36,000 it is expected to pay to NUGS into the SRC Yi Bi Boa Scholarship.
