The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) on Tuesday organized a workshop on Private – Public Partnership for the sustainable intensification of maize production for the crop’s value chain.
After the workshop, Univers News spoke to some of the participants and they shared with us how the workshop was beneficial to them.
Speaking to Mr. Amatey who was representative of the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG), he noted that the workshop held him understand the value chain in the seed-maize industry.
With this workshop, its been so important to us, as it will help us to understand the value chain in the seed maize industry and it will enable us to play our cards very well so that we will be able to link the basic farmer to the appropriate agencies in order to get their work being done and also get what we are yearning for,” he said.
Also, a representative from the Assisi farms, Madam Victoria, also mentioned that initially, purchasing maize for processing had been a difficult challenge for them but the workshop has helped her get other best alternative maize producers to purchase from
…the main issue is that we are able to go there ourselves to do the purchases due to time and availability of finances so we have to depend on the middlemen and when we send them the money, the quantity they send to you will not be up to what is expected.’’
‘’The seminar has offered me the opportunity to meet and network with other farmers so I now have new maize producers that I can buy from’’
Similarly, a representative of the Bono East Region farmers also expressed his approval of the workshop
“this workshop has been important to me in the sense that creates a platform for actors in the value chain like the input dealers, the traders, the processors and the researchers too to come together, so it a very nice platform whereby we can be able to express our views and challenges which good to help us so that if I’m a farmer in case I need any help pertaining to other sectors I will be able to get it from the workshop as we all meet’’
