The University of Ghana, Legon Chapter of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party has petitioned the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu over the growing state of insecurity on the university campus.
In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor through the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, the petitioners sought to initiate conversations at the highest decision-making body on campus to reexamine the institutional provision on security.
“We the undersigned leadership of University of Ghana TESCON, being bona fide students of the University, petition your able and high authority to reexamine the institution’s protection arrangements to shore up the security and safety of students” – the petition said.
This comes in the wake of the murder of a young man along the Mensah Sarbah Hall Annex C to PDMSD road and the increasing cases of theft and assault perpetuated by unknown assailants here on campus.
The petitioners also noted with concern the decline in visibility of security detail on campus.
“We are heart-stricken by the recent inexplicable murder of a young man along the Mensah Sarbah Hall – Bush Canteen stretch. We, in the same vein, commiserate with the dozens of students who have been rendered victims of robbery and burglary. More so, we are aggrieved by the dwindling security visibility on campus and the withdrawal of security at the Hilla Liman, Kwapong, Elizabeth Sey and Nelson Halls”
Owing to this, the petitioners are calling for the review and subsequent amendment of the security detail as the current situation is a threat to students comfort and safety.
“We are desirous of the rectification of this anomaly and seeing that the current situation negatively affects the safety and security of students and creates fear and panic among the student populace” – the petition stated.
The petitioners also requested that management find lasting solutions to the security gaps and visibility on security on campus to ultimately ensure the safety and security of students.
“In the exercise of our rights, and for the promotion of maximum convenience, therefore, humbly request that:
- Measures be taken to correct the appalling security visibility on campus.
- Safety and security gaps in the Halls of Residence are remedied to arrest the spate of burglary and robbery.
- Institutional management be operationalized to produce seminal ideas on how to better the safety systems in the University.”
According to the petition, it draws legal reference from Act 806 (2010) of the constitution of Ghana which mandates the University to ensure the comfort, security and safety of students whiles on campus.
“In pursuance of the sacred object of the University of Ghana as enshrined in the University of Ghana Act, (Act 806) – to set aside impediments to academic comfort, security and safety” the petition added.
The petition was undersigned by the President of UG TESCON, Ebenezer Frimpong, and John Apasipanga,Kwbena Krobea Atta Asante and Abdallah Abdul Martin who is the Vice President, the Secretary and the Communication Officer of the outfit respectively.
