Management of the University of Ghana has heeded the calls from students requesting an extension of the calendar for the 2020/2021 academic year.
Students will now have twelve weeks of academic activity instead of the initial nine.
This was settled on at a meeting between university authorities led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu and student leaders of the univeristy.
At the meeting which was held at the Great Hall of the University, the acting president of the Students Representative Council, Kwame-Amo Ntwo-Fianko, among other things, proposed that the mode of learning will be face-to-face.
He also requested that students will be given at least 14weeks to complete their assessments.
“We also propose that the examination will take 30% and there should be an additional four to five weeks which will facilitate assessment at a score of 70%. In expatiating this, we are proposing that students will be given at least 14 weeks to complete the assessment which covers majority of work done for the semester,” he requested.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, after a brief consultation with other management members, agreed to grant an extension to the period for academic activities.
The application of the extension, will, however, be at the discretion of faculty.
“We will go through the normal nine weeks of learning within which you will try and submit your assignments. If for any reason you are unable to submit your assignment, we will grant you a three weeks extension so you submit your assignments,”
Meanwhile, Prof. Oduro Owusu indicated that the University cannot rescind its decision to run a modular system for the 2020/2021 academic year because of the Covid-19 situation on the campus of the university.
According to him, the data of Covid-19 infections among members of the university community was alarming, hence, it will be unhealthy to allow all students to return to campus at a goal.
He also debunked the assertion that there were no recorded infections among students who returned to campus last year to complete the 2019/2020 academic year.
“The times in which we are in are extremely unsual. We have to ensure that we reduce our density in terms of population on campus. The data that we have of Covid-19 infections on this campus is extremely alarming. Thinking through, the idea is that we thin out and I think this is an application of wisdom to the best of my knowledge. IF we allow all students to come on campus, I bet you, we may have to lock down this university somewhere along the line. The assertion that when students came on campus to complete the semester nothing happened is certainly not true. We did not get students to know the figures so all that we did was that, once you get infected, we ask you to go home or at that time, we even had an isolation centre, we put you there quietly but the situation is not healthy.
He also assured students that the running of the modular system is going to be temporal.
He described the intervention as a crisis management situation.
“It is not going to be a temporal feature. It is a temporal thing that will enable us to run the academic year and then we hope to restore the academic year. I call it a test run. It’s just a crisis management situation and I want everyone to understand and cooperate,” he said.

We didn’t request for extension, we requested for cancelation of the whole double track thing nu
The university has taken more than the required number of freshmen. That is why they just can’t go back to the usual academic system. The leaders of the university just need money. If they had the intention of admitting a lot of freshmen, why didn’t they build more lecture halls and residential halls. This is a clear image that the leaders of the university of Ghana are money minded and not academic minded
You expect a student in college of health to learn a course with a topic having over 70 slides in a day and pass. And moreover if the student should fail, you’ll charge him or her a fee. This is totally nonsense.
THE STUDENTS OF UG TOGETHER WITH THEIR PARENTS ARE NOT KIDS TO BE DECEIVED BY A FLIMSY EXCUSE TO THIS MODULAR SYSTEM
Exactly! You’re right
Oh a whole premier university Goshhh!! This double track thing won’t help us, and you also changing it making it face-face is even worse because if I think I’ve the covid and it’s mild and no one will notice I’ll come to class since I don’t want to miss lectures and this is going to put others in danger. UG you people must sit and replan this whole thing rather than trying to do the unimportant things
Why can’t we use the normal weeks and still use the double track system. Or better still continue our online learning with the 100 and 400 on campus and 200 and 300 in the house.
The whole idea about the double track system will surely have effect on us sometime to come. All I hope for is that when we return back to school and everything goes back to normal, it won’t affect the continuing students and theirs halls. Because it will appear so unfair to us
Am a parent from Sunyani whose ward is admitted to city campus where there is no accommodation. Where do our wards stay to learn. This is unfair, if they are not qualified, deny them. But u admitted them into that chicken pen as university bcos u need the money. Do u expect this children to be in their right mind when their colleagues are on the main campus. We are all Ghanaian ug management
We are tired and sick of this modular system. Why admit more than you can care for. On the more serious note, how do you expect us to stay home for additional 4 months after staying away from school for 10 months. Which means we will be at home for more than a year, all because of covid 19. Chaaiii🤭..
Never expected this from UG, the premier university 😂
This modular system de3 chaiiii!!!!
UG paaa. We weren’t expecting this from you kraaa. And wait, why can’t we use the normal weeks to complete our academic activities. Even the normal weeks kwraa students are straggling, how much more a reduction in the weeks then there will be bomb Paa in UG
Please how’s the management going to handle the issue of inadequate accommodation on the side of most level 100 students
I’m even still in shock that upon the double tracking which only l100 and 400 are reporting, the L400 are still struggling for accommodation, so what has happened to the space which was to be occupied by the 200s and 300s?
After reading the article and comments, all I will say is, Let us behold the school where we belong. Pathetic!
UG management just wants students to sacrifice their freedom, time and health for their self interests.
