UG: Management revises UGRCs; numeracy skills, four others to be discontinued

Management of the University of Ghana has announced the revision of its required courses (UGRC), effective the 2020/2021 academic year.

A notice, signed by the UGRC Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Atobrah, and sent via email to members of the University community indicated that the revision was discussed in March last year in consultation with student leaders.

Some four required courses, which were previously available only in a particular semester for selected will now be available in both semesters of an academic year.

These four are Academic Writing I (UGRC 110), Critical Thinking and Practical Reasoning (UGRC 150), Academic Writing II (UGRC 210), and Introduction to African Studies (UGRC 220-238)

Meanwhile, some five others will be discontinued.

The notice mentioned that they will be replaced by College level required courses which will make up for the shortage in credit hours.

Among the five are Numeracy Skills (UGRC 120) and General Mathematics (UGRC 170)

The rest are Understanding Human Societies (UGRC 131-136), Science and Technology in our Lives (UGRC 141-146), and Introduction to Literature (UGRC 160).

The notice from the UGRC Coordinator clarified that the revision will not affect continuing students who are yet to take any of the phased-out courses.

Continuing students have been advised to take them within the 2020/2021 academic year.

The University says that it has mounted the following UGRCs for all continuing students who have not as yet taken them

  • UGRC 110: Academic Writing I
  • UGRC 120: Numeracy Skills
  • UGRC 135: Understanding Human Societies (Human Behaviour and Social Environment)
  • UGRC 142: Science and Technology in our Lives: (Animals as Friends)
  • UGRC 150: Critical Thinking and Practical Reasoning
  • UGRC 160: Introduction to Literature
  • UGRC 170: Introduction to Mathematics
  • UGRC 230: Introduction to African Studies (Culture and Gender in Africa)

Part of the notice reads:

“Affected students must endeavor to register for the courses they have not taken. Students are to note that the mopping-up exercise shall not be extended beyond the 2020/2021 academic year. All continuing students reporting to School for the 1st semester, in January 2021   who have not  taken any of the level 100 and level 200 UGRC courses should register by providing the details below in an email to ugrc@ug.edu.gh:
