The Alumni Relations Office of the University of Ghana is set to organize the first ever UG Alumni Homecoming Weekend.
The Homecoming is schedule for Friday, 9th August to Sunday, 11th August 2019.
The event is expected to attract distinguished alumni back to their alma mater for the purposes of networking and merrymaking.
The event is part of the University of Ghana 70th anniversary celebrations.
Speaking at the media launch, Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu emphasized that the event was important for the development of the university.
He explained that a strong alumni could generate the needed support to aid the university attain its vision of gaining a world class status.
Prof Oduro Owusu mentioned that that through the efforts of the Alumni office, two more global chapters of Alumni have been opened. The two are UG Alumni Association North America (UGAANA) and UG Alumni Association, UK.
He also pleaded with the media to help to assist “in providing wide coverage for our activities to make the UG@70 Alumni Homecoming a memorable one.”
Concerning the University of Ghana endowment fund, the Vice-Chancellor the fund, which was launched last year, has nearly GHC 6million in its account.
Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu further appealed for more support to aid the University attain its $100m target.
“The UG@70 Endowment Fund has yielded about GHC 5.6m so far. Out of this amount, the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) donated GHC 120,000 while the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), University of Ghana Branch, made a donation of GHC 50,000. The 93 Year Group of the University of Ghana Alumni has also donated GHC 100,000 and the Bank of Ghana has contributed GHC 20,000 towards the Fund. I will like to entreat all alumni of the University as well as the general public to support the University in achieving its target of US$100 million” he said
About the Alumni Homecoming Weekend,
The Alumni Homecoming is a thanksgiving event to commemorate the University’s 70th anniversary which was celebrated last year.
Proceeds from the event will go to the UG @70 Endowment Fund, which is aimed to aid research and the learning experience at the University.
Some activities to included in the homecoming celebration will be a campus tour, inter-hall sports competition, food bazaar, Bon fire, Jama night, among others.
