The Senior Librarian of the University of Ghana Library Services (UGLS) has called on students to make adequate use of the Libraries for the purpose for which they were built.
The Balme Library and other Satellite libraries serve as a repository of information and a conducive environment for studies for both students and non-students.
Though Management has made a number of renovations, maintenance works and policies to bring about new initiatives to provide better services for patrons, UGLS has observed dwindling numbers in patrons.
Senior Librarian of UGLS, Professor Pepertual Sekyiwaa Dadzie explained that the libraries has over the years moved away from the traditional way of disseminating information, which was the use of print material, to a more electronic based media to be able to reach students and patrons from within and outside the school.
She talked about the off campus initiative that allows students to access services of the Library even when they are not on campus.
“The Balme library and the other satellite libraries have actually transformed a lot. We are now using a lot of technology to be able to reach our patrons”
Shenoted that the Libraries have been mandated in line with the University of Ghana’s Strategic Plan to provide credible and critically scrutinized information.
“People will say I do not need the Library because I have the internet but it is not everything that is on the internet that is credible, but the Libraries through a number of measures make sure that credible information gets to our patrons”.
She urged students to take advantage of the resources provided by UGLS for study purposes and make use of the newly created online portals to access materials from the Library without having to physically visit the Library.
“We have a powerful website if you can’t remember the library website go to the University’s main website and you will get access to the services we provide”
She added that the UGLS provides training sessions to create awareness on the facilities of the library and how they are used.
“It is no use have the resources and not knowing how to see them, when you go the website you will see an outline of vigorous training sessions that we provide for patrons to create awareness on the facilities”.
She noted with disappointment the disregard for rules and regulations by students and non-students alike whiles patronizing the services of the library. Prof. Dadzie advised students to adhere to the statutes that govern the use of UGLS.
“I expect that since you are in the University, there are a few rules and regulations pasted here and there so that you know what to do without disturbing anyone.”
She concluded by saying these are facilities made for students to enhance their learning at the University hence they should take advantage of these services and take time to pass by the Library to find out at least what is happening.
