The SRC representatives of the Distance Education, Accra City and Korle-bu campuses of the University of Ghana are up in arms about the subventions of 20,800.00, 32,800.00 and 20,400.00 allocated to their respective campuses.
They vehemently protested against the proposed SRC budget that was presented at the just held General assembly sitting; September 27th, 2019.
The President of the Information Studies Students’ Association; Distance Education, Victoria Antwi, bemoaned the huge amounts allocated to what she deems as “frivolous activities” which are prerogatives of main campus student.
“They are spending 28,250.00 on Akwabaa night for main campus students, meanwhile while we have 11 campuses to cater for, and we’ve been allocated a meagre 20,800.00.This is absurd”, she lamented.
The SRC president, Distance Education, Daniel Adjumani also expressed bitter sentiments about the insurmountable challenges and immense responsibilities the Distance Education campuses are battling with;
“Some students do not get seats to sit on during lectures, meanwhile, they are also students of the university that have the right to these facilities.
During the orientation, some students sat under the mercy of the sun because we were unable to get enough canopies”.
The representatives of the satellite campuses further argued that they contribute towards the SRC coffers through the payment of dues and thus deserve a fair share of the budget.
In view of the myriad concerns that were raised, President of the Information Studies Students’ Association; Distance Education, Victoria Antwi moved a motion that the subventions of both Accra city campus and distance education be increased from GHC32,800.00 to GHC 50,000.00 and ghc 20,800.00 to GHC 50,000.00 respectively.
A representative from the Korle bu campus again moved a motion, for an increase in their subvention from GHC20,400.00 to GHC35,000.00.
After much contention and fierce debates, the house approved a sum of 50,000.00 to be allocated to Accra city and Distance Education campuses.
