The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has denied claims of neglecting the Aggrieved Student Loan Beneficiaries in acquiring locked up funds over the past three academic years from the Student Loan Trust Fund.
The follows claims made by the Public Relations Officer of the Aggrieved Student Loan Beneficiaries, Mr. Orlando Daniel that the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has “been missing” in the process of getting the Student Loan Trust fund to disburse funds to the beneficiaries.
Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students, Divine Edem Kwadwodeh in an interview with UniversNews indicated that the claims were false and stated that the first disbursement of the funds in January and March was as a result of negotiations and petitioning on the part of NUGS.
“It is not the case that NUGS has been absent from the entire process. Even the few sums that have been paid to the beneficiaries were as a result of advocacy by the union. NUGS has been engaging the relevant stakeholders over the past months right from the beginning of this year over the none payment of the funds. So it is upon our advocacy that those who have been paid got paid so it is not that NUGS has been absent, so I would like to correct that misconception” he shared.
Divine Edem Kwadwodeh however admitted that not all students have benefited from the first disbursement and assured that efforts are still ongoing to change this.
“I however admit that some people have still not received their sums. And our advocacies in that regard have not yielded positive results yet but the advocacy still continues” he said.
The Aggrieved Student Loan Beneficiaries have however called on the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) to disburse their funds which have been locked up for over the past three academic years.
The Aggrieved Student Loan Beneficiaries indicated in their report that there have been checks and researches conducted by some of their members which show that the Students Loan and Trust Fund (SLTF) lack funds to disburse to beneficiaries, and has made SLTF stop updating beneficiaries about the progress of disbursement.
