Embattled Junior Common Room (JCR) President of the Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall, Isaac Selassie Ahadzi, has demanded an unqualified apology from the Hall’s parliament for accusing him of opting to be absent from the hall’s Parliamentary sitting.
He adds that he would file a legal suit against the House if they do not apologize by midday today.
According to him, it is untrue and misleading that he forfeited the first parliamentary sitting on purpose.
Speaking to UniversNews, he said that he was unaware of the sitting since he did not receive any summon from parliament to appear before it during its first sitting for the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year.
He explained that the initial notice received from the Speaker was on Thursday, 7th February 2019 calling for a sitting the following day, which was Friday 8th February; a date he explained to the Speaker will be unfavorable since he had other equally important engagements.
“So my problem is that first off; even up to the setting of the parliamentary sitting, I was engaged by the Speaker of Parliament on Thursday and he told me that we have a parliamentary sitting the next day which was Friday. But I told him that, that is not possible because of the timing and also because of the fact that there were some management issues. So we couldn’t even get the approval for the funds from the JCR accounts which are needed to run the sitting” he disclosed
Mr. Ahadzi added that he was taken aback when he later found out that the Speaker of Parliament decided to hold the sitting on Monday, 11 February 2019, without formally writing to him.
He pointed out that he did not show up at the sitting because from the onset it was flawed.
“Here is the case that if you’re going to have a parliamentary sitting; the leadership of parliament engages the president to see if there are any contributions to the order paper or agenda before they proceed. He (speaker) did nothing of the sort; no official summons was given to me to appear before parliament… so to my best of knowledge there was nothing going on”
He thus called on the leadership of parliament to render an immediate apology to him before midday in other to avert a possible legal tussle.
“…in the first place no summons was served to me to come and appear for the said parliamentary sitting that they had. But then, the basis upon which they set their new interim committee was the fact that we refused to appear before parliament, we have stopped working and we didn’t regard ourselves as JCR executives… I want an unqualified apology in writing from parliament and I want this done by midday. If not I’m just going to take this case to court” he stressed
On 11 February 2019, the parliament of the Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall held its first parliamentary sitting where it resolved that due to the expiration of the Selassie Ahadzi led administration last year and the failure of both the president and the financial secretary to show up to deliver the state of the JCR; there was a need to form an interim executive council to run the affairs of the hall
In a communique released by the Hall’s parliament and signed by the speaker, Right Honorable Joseph Star Botchway, the President alongside the financial secretary decided not to show up on the basis that their term was over and thus were no longer under the dictates of the constitution.
