Candidates contesting for an executive office in this year’s Ghana Institute of Journalism Students Representative Council (GIJ-SRC) elections can now campaign for votes; the Electoral Commission (EC) of the school’s SRC has announced.
The announcement was made at a press conference held today April 5.
The press conference was organized by EC to also announce aspirants who were eligible to contest for any of the executive offices of the SRC for the 2019/2020 academic year.
Over fifteen persons are contesting for various offices in this year’s election.
Michael Ofori Yeboah is the only candidate running unopposed in this year’s election. He is contesting for the office of Organizing Secretary.
Michael Yeboah filed his nominations during the second window opened for the picking of forms after all two Organizing Secretary aspirants, Jeffery Agyemang and Cedric Kekeli Afewu, were declared ineligible for peculiar reasons by the EC Vetting Panel.
According to the EC, the two were disqualified for failure to pay tuition fees and failure to impress the Vetting Panel respectively.
Barely an hour after the announcement that the ban on campaign had been lifted, some school WhatsApp groups were flooded with “vote for me” posters of presidential candidates Evans Aziamor-Mensah and Joseph Agbezuke.
