Polio immunization for children aged under the age of 5 begins today Wednesday, September 11, the Ghana Health Service has announced.
The immunization exercise has become necessary following the surge in reported polio cases in some parts of the Northern and Greater Accra Region.
In July this year, the Ghana Health Service declared a public health emergency following the detection of the poliovirus type-2 in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale
The immunization exercise will be embarked twice this month, the first phase begins from today the 11th of September to 14th September.
It then continues again from the 25th to 28th of this month
The Ghana Health Service in a statement also announced the deployment of teams from Accra to assist the regional and district teams to carry out a massive investigation into the reported cases.
Ghana has been polio-free for the past 10 years.
However, Polio still remains a threat to global health as there are outbreaks in 12 African countries as well as in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Syrian.
