The coach of the University of Ghana Debate Society and veteran debater on the West African debate circuit, Mr. Antonio Edem Asinyo has made history by becoming the first Ghanaian to be elected president of the Council of the World’s University Debate Championship (WUDC).
The election took place January 1 2019 on the sidelines of the Worlds University Debate Championship in Cape Town, South Africa.
He was elected alongside Mr. Julio Meyer from Mexico, Tshiamo Malatjii from South Africa and Kerrin R-s from New Zealand as Registrar, Secretary and Equity Officer respectively. They will serve a one year renewable mandate.
The WUDC Council is the sovereign body that among other mandates, governs and oversees the running of the prestigious World University Debate Championship.
Mr. Antonio Edem Asinyo was also first Ghanaian to be elected Equity Officer to the Council.
He was Convenor for the Pan African Universities Debate Championship 2015 (PAUDC) which was hosted by the University of Ghana and has been instrumental in the development of the quality and scope of debating as a sport in West Africa.
He is also the first coach of the University of Ghana Debate Society under the auspices of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate.
His election will among other things be a positive signal to the many voices that are seeking reforms in the structure of the Worlds University Debate Championship.
