Head of the Center for Policy Discourse Analysis (CDPA), Dr. Etse Sikanku believes that the ruling New Patriotic Party did well in settling on Peter Mac Manu to lead the part’s effort to win the 2020 elections considering his experience in political campaigns in the country.
Making an analysis of the choice, Dr. Sikanku stressed that the role of the campaign chairman was very crucial as it had the potency of getting the entire campaign in disarray.
He says that if political parties are unable to get their selection of a campaign chairman right, their bid to capture power would likely end in disappointment.
In view of that, the political communication lecturer says that Peter Mac Manu’s exposure to political campaign activities makes him fit to play the role as the NPP campaign chairman.
“First thing going for Peter Mac Manu is the experience. This is the NPP deciding that they would rather go with an old familiar, experienced hand. Mac Manu as we know him has the political strategy, political knowledge and political skills to be able to play that role as campaign chair,” Dr. Sikanku expressed.
He adds that the level of confidence that has been entrusted in Mac Manu by the party and their leading presidential candidate, is one that may help him effectively play his role as campaign manager.
“He is somebody that the party and the presidency, and the candidate for that matter is comfortable with…We know that for the NDC for instance, one of things that came up in the 2016 election was that dichotomy between the candidate and the party wing. For Peter Mac Manu’s appointment, you would realize that it is an appointment that both candidate and party is comfortable with. They have worked before and it has worked for them and they would want to try it again,” he added
Dr. Sikanku was, however, quick to add that the party could have considered introducing a new face to the table so as to attract young people.
He mentions that party should have rather settled on someone who is conversant with digital media platforms as the world was in a social media age.
He made reference to other political actors in other countries and how they had involved new faces who knew how to work with younger people.
Dr. Sikanku also questioned whether Peter Mac Manu still had the energy to run around canvassing for votes for the ruling party.
“The other thing that he does not have going for him is that he is an old horse and the NPP probably needs a new hand with fresh ideas. Somebody who is very adept with the social media age. If you look at Hilary Clinton and other candidates, they brought new fresh faces who are data driven and really know how to work with young people,” he noted
“But not to take any thing away from him, it’s just that he is an old horse and you would have probably expected them to appoint a new hand in this particular campaign moving forward,” he concluded.
Peter Mac Manu appointment as NPP campaign chairman for election 2020
Earlier this week, the New Patriotic Party announced that it had selected Peter Mac Manu to, once again, be the party’s campaign manager for the 2020 election.
Peter Mac Manu played the same role in party in the 2016 election.
According to the General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, the party was keen on maintaining the team that won the 2016 elections, hence, their decision to maintain Mac Manu, a former National Chairman as their campaign manager.
“… we are not changing the winning team; Mac Manu will lead our campaign team and when the full list comes out, it is going to be solid,” he said.
