Deputy Minister of Transport, Hon Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover started a week tour of agencies and departments under the Ministry of Transport yesterday after he was sworn into office as the Deputy Minister of Transport by President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 12th April 2017.
The purpose of the tour is ascertain the workings of these state institutions and address possible challenges they face. The first point of call was the Intercity State Transport Company. On arrival, he was welcomed by Hon. Samuel Nuamah Donkor (the outgoing Managing Director) and his management. After the exchange of pleasantries and introductions, the Deputy Minister sought to know how the company was faring.
Management of the company hinted on the following as their major challenges: flooding in the area when it rains, breakdown of vehicles, no tax exemptions on spare parts acquired by the state company, and others. They however expressed satisfaction of the resolution of fuel issues with Goil.
Management also discussed with the deputy minister about the need to collaborate with the Drivers Licencing and Vehicles Authority (DVLA) and the private sector so that they render DVLA services. Advertising on the Intercity STC buses electronically with companies to generate more revenue for the company was not left out in the discussions.
In his remarks, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover said the ministry was going to take expedite action to address some of their concerns. He also told them not to compromise on the safety of their passengers. “Do not experiment the safety of your passengers”- Hon. Titus Glover.
He was accompanied by the Chief Director, Director of the Finance and Administration, Public Relations Officer, Policy Planning Officer, Office Assistants and other officials of the Ministry. The second point of call was the Ghana Technical Training College (GTTC).
At GTTC, management raised issues regarding promotions, poor conditions of services and flooding. Hon. Titus Glover asked management and staff of the company to submit a bargaining agreement proposal for study and discussions by a joint committee to be formed by the Ministry and college. On the issue of the flood, he said the Ministry will liase with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the geological department of the Ministry of works and housing to address it. GTTC revealed that they were collaborating with a school in Germany by name GTZ to upgrade their workshop with tools and equipments. The last point of call yesterday was the Metro Mass Transit Company.
Issues raised at Metro Mass were not different from the Intercity STC aside of the lack of terminals for buses, broken buses and bad washing rooms in the company.
Hon. Titus Glover tasked the Deputy Managing Director to immediately take steps in the addressing the sanitation challenge with respect to the washrooms. In his remarks, Hon. Titus Glover stressed on the need to change the work culture of the company entirely, protect state properties and see the company as their own.
He assured them of the commitment of the sector Minister and the Ministry as a whole in addressing their challenges. He also asked them not to compromise the safety of their passengers. The Deputy Minister is expected to also visit DVLA, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, Regional Maritime University and Ghana Shippers Authority this week.
