Sorrow struck the University of Ghana community on Saturday evening after a final year student was reported to have drowned in the swimming pool at the University of Ghana sports directorate.
The 22-year old was identified as Dennis Akoto, a final year student at the University of Ghana studying Economics and information studies.
According to reports he had gone to the poolside in the company of his friends for an afternoon relaxation.
Sources at the University of Ghana sports directorate, who witnessed the incident confirmed to Univers news’ that the drowning incident occurred at the poolside. However they dismissed rumours that the final year student was pronounced dead when he was removed from the water.
An official at the poolside who gave his name as BB, revealed that Dennis Akoto was rushed to the University of Ghana hospital and died some hours later.
Director of the University of Ghana hospital also confirmed the incident to Univers news saying that “Although he drowned at the poolside, he was resuscitated at the hospital”
He further urged the University community to be patient and desist from making speculations about the death until the final investigations are carried out.
Some of his friends from his Alma Mater Presec legon have been posting about his death on social media describing him as a ‘good swimmer’.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
