Two househelps who stole $14,000 and GH¢10,500 belonging to their employer at Labone in Accra have been handed seven years in jail by an Accra Circuit Court.
Dorcas Ahenkorah and Regina Akosua Agyemang Aboagyewaa will serve four years and three years in prison respectively.
They had pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and stealing, but were found guilty after a full trial by the court presided over by Ms Ellen Ofei-Ayeh.
Indeed, the two confessed to the court during the course of the trial that they actually stole the money because the woman they served was not taking good care of them.
Use of the money
It was also revealed during the trial that Aboagyewaa used GH¢7,200 out of her share of the money to rent a two bedroom apartment at Mallam Gbawe in Accra where she intended to go and live with her fiancé.
She also used GH¢5,513 to buy personal effects and household items for the new apartment.
For Ahenkorah, it came up that she used part of her booty to renovate her father’s building at Akim Awisa and also bought a mobile phone worth GH¢800 for herself.
“Further, police investigation led to the retrieval of US$2,100 equivalent to GH¢11,550 together with GH¢100 from Aboagyewaa, while US$1,700 equivalent to GH¢9,350, and GH¢3,760 were also retrieved from Ahenkorah,” the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Fuseini Yakubu, told the court.
The facts as presented by ASP Yakubu were that Aboagyewaa had lived with the businesswoman for about six years, while Ahenkorah had done so for about three years.
He said the businesswoman had been experiencing series of theft of her money in her bedroom.
On December 21, 2019, the businesswoman, the prosecutor said, kept two white envelopes containing GH¢15,000 and $14,000 respectively in her hand bag under her bed.
ASP Yakubu said the next day, the businesswoman checked the money and detected that GH¢10,500 and the USD$14,000 were stolen.
The prosecutor said the businesswoman suspected Aboagyewaa and Ahenkorah as those who might have stolen the monies.
She thus invited Aboagyewaa and Ahenkorah and questioned them about the rate at which her money had been missing from the bedroom and reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the two.
