Senior Emergency Medicine Specialist at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC), Dr. Godfred Takyi has reiterated the effectiveness of the nose mask in preventing the contraction and spread of the coronavirus.
That notwithstanding, he is advising that the practice is done alongside proper hand hygiene.
He made this comments on Behind the Headlines on Radio Univers.
“Face masks are very effective only when used in combination with frequent hand hygiene. Hand hygiene in this case means washing your hands with soap under running water or using hand sanitizer which should be alcohol based and should be above 60 percent. Before you wear a face mask, you have to wash your hands properly. It is key because, if you don’t wash your hands, you won’t know what your hands have come into contact with.” He said.
Dr. Godfred Takyi further explained that before one touches the nose mask for any reason, it is advisable for the person to ensure their hands are clean.
“If for any reason, you have to touch your face mask you clean your hands before you touch and clean your hands after.” He said.
He further emphasized on the need for every Ghanaian to adhere strictly to all the safety and preventive measures.
“We can win the war against this disease if we all agree to be disciplined to adhere to the safety and preventive measure” he said.
