The University of Ghana Swimming team captain Akindoroye Dare Samuel has been elected as the fifth General Secretary of the University of Ghana Students’ Sports Council (UGSSC).
Dre, as he is popularly called will be the first international student to take up the position and will succeed the first female General Sports Secretary Edna Alidza Daniels. The Nigerian international gathered a total number of 34 votes in the UGSSC elections as against his rival Afrifa Prince who had 6 votes.
NEW UGSSC EXECUTIVES
Samuel will be assisted by Aishatu Ali, a handball and netball player, who currently occupies the position of Welfare Secretary. They will work with Mensah Suleman as Men’s Organizer, Jennifer Tutor as Women’s Organizer and Welfare Secretary Abu Rew Adam who won the position with 24 votes. The positions of Assistant General Secretary, Men’s Organizer and Women’s Organizer went unopposed.
Akindoroye Dare Samuel is a third year student of the University of Ghana majoring in Archaeology and minoring in Political Science. He was an 800m runner in his school days in Nigeria and began competitive swimming in 2015. Taking over the swimming captaincy from Mark Ofosu last year, Samuel played an active role in increasing student participation in the inter-hall swimming competition.
The University of Ghana Students’ Sports Council has been in existence since 2014 and was structured by Jafaru Mustapha who became the first General Sports Secretary. He was succeeded by long distance athlete Akuka Williams who passed the baton to Dennis Ababio Jnr, who then handed over to the first female secretary Edna Alidza Daniels.
Samuel Dare Akindoroye in an interview with Univers Sports, promised to bring unity among the sportspersons on campus “Unity….. Sports is a lifestyle so live it”.
