University of Ghana students will be heading to the polls today [Thursday, April 20 2017 ] to elect new leaders to take over from the Esinam Afi Seade led administration.
The election was originally scheduled to take place on April 11 2017, however the electoral commission in consultation with the candidates and the dean of students called off the elections after widespread technical hitches and logistical challenges were recorded at almost all polling centers.
A total of 5 (five) candidates will be contesting for the SRC Presidential position, as compared to the 7 candidates who run for the office last year.
Schandorf Ayirebi-Acquah, Daniel Awuah-Otting, Slyvester Amoako, Pascal Agbesi, and Daakyehene Gerald will be the names on the ballot, after the disaqualifications of Alfred Kumi Ababio, and David Johnson due to inability to to meet the CGPA requirements and failing to pass the UG-SRC electoral commission vetting.
The elections is expected to be contested keenly, with a likelihood of a run-off between the top two candidates, as was witnessed last year.
However, one thing is certain going into this election and its the fact that the University of Ghana will not be having a 3rd female to lead the students front in the university after Louise Carol Serwaah Donkor and Esinam Seade.
Other portfolios to be contested include the General Secretary and the Financial Secretary, both portfolios have two individuals contesting.
Maame Serwaa Arkoful popularly known as the ‘flower girl’ will battle it out with Fafa Esi Mensah in a very heated race for the UG-SRC General Secretary slot.
Effah Emmanuel and Ethel Donkoh will also be locking horns to take over from Prince Amoah Ampofo as the University of Ghana SRC financial secretary.
