The 2017 University of Ghana SRC elections is headed towards a run-off between 3rd year Political science student Daniel Otting-Awuah and Sylvester Amoak0 Kwashie from the University of Ghana medical school.
Daniel Otting Awuah takes a commanding lead with a difference of 238 votes between him and second placed Sylvester Amoako Kwashie.
The election recorded the lowest voter turnout in recent years with a total of 4134 votes for the presidential race.
Daniel Otting Awuah managed to win 10 out of a total of 13 polling centers, the remaining three which include the Korle-Bu Campus, the Alexander Kwapong and Hilla Limann hall polling center was won by Slyvester Amoako Kwashie.
The Korle-Bu campus defied the voter apathy tag and voted massively for Sylvester Amoako Kwashie, the medical school student won convincingly at the Korle-Bu polling center with a difference of 506 votes to beat his closest contender, Daniel Otting Awuah. They remaining candidates all recorded no votes at the polling center.
Daniel Otting Awuah popularly known as “Levelz” obtained a total of 1963 votes representing 47.5% of total vote cast as against his closest contender, who pulled 1725 votes representing 41.7%.
The elections, however produced a lot of surprises with Schandorf Ayirebi-Acquah as the biggest casualty. Schandorf Ayirebi-Acquah topped the vetting for Presidential candidates but performed poorly in the election. He managed a paltry 194 votes representing 4.692%
Pascal Hayford Agbesi came last in the presidential race after the only visually impaired candidate in the race, Daakyhene Gerald beat him with 8 votes.
The new date for the run-off between the top two candidates is yet to be communicated from the electoral commission.
In a related development, Ethel Donkor and Maame Serwaa Arkoful have been elected as UG-SRC treasurer and General Secretary elect.
Ethel Donkor obtained 2,075 votes to beat Effah Emmanuel who recorded 1,863 votes.
The heatedly contested General Secretary race also saw Janet Maame Serwaa Arkoful garner 2188 votes as against Fafa Esi Mensah’s 1853 votes
